Terms & Conditions
The terms that apply when you join, borrow, book a visit or use this website
Last updated: 26 Aug 2026
These terms apply to anyone who uses this website, joins as a member, borrows or reserves items, or books a visit at the Greek Library of London ("the library", "we", "us"). By using the site or holding a membership, you agree to them. If anything here conflicts with what a member of staff has told you in person, please ask us to confirm it in writing.
Membership
Anyone can apply for membership through this website or in person. We may decline or end a membership where these terms have been broken, where information given to us is false, or to protect the library, its staff, volunteers or other members.
Membership fees are shown at checkout when you join or renew, and are charged securely through Stripe. The youth rate is available to members who are under 25 on the day they join, based on the date of birth given to us. When a youth member reaches 25, their membership continues to the end of the period already paid for and then renews at the standard rate; we tell them before this happens.
Membership renews automatically each year unless you cancel it. You can cancel at any time from "My Membership" in your account; cancelling stops future renewal but does not refund the current period, and you keep full access until it ends.
Some memberships are recorded by library staff rather than billed automatically. For these, speak to a librarian about renewal.
Your membership card, physical or digital, is personal to you and should not be lent to anyone else.
Borrowing
Members may borrow up to 5 items at a time.
The standard loan period is 30 days from the date you borrow an item.
A loan can usually be renewed up to 2 time(s), for a further 30 days each time, as long as no one else is waiting for the item. Renew from "My Loans" in your account or ask at the library.
Overdue items are charged £0.30 for each day the library is open that they remain out. Days we are closed cost nothing. The fine on any one loan is capped at £10.00 for standard membership and £5.00 for youth membership.
Please return items in the condition you borrowed them. We may charge the replacement cost of an item that is lost, or returned damaged beyond normal wear.
You can reserve an item that is out on loan. When it becomes available we hold it for you for 7 days before releasing it to the next member waiting.
Booking a visit
Visits can be booked up to 60 days ahead through "Visit us". A booking guarantees you a space for 120 minutes from your chosen arrival time; arrival times are offered in 120-minute slots throughout the day. You can cancel a booking at any time before it starts, from your account or the confirmation email.
You do not need to be a member to book a visit. If you book as a guest, we ask for a name, email address and phone number so we can contact you about the booking. See our privacy notice for how that is used.
Using this website
Keep your password confidential and let us know straight away if you think someone else has access to your account. You are responsible for activity carried out on your account with your knowledge.
Please give accurate, current information when you register or update your details, so we can contact you about loans, reservations and your membership.
Please do not attempt to disrupt the site, gain unauthorised access to it, scrape or bulk-download its content, or use it for any unlawful purpose. We may suspend or close accounts that do this.
Book and record details, including cover images, come from public catalogue data and from publishers' and booksellers' own databases, and remain the property of their respective owners. Everything else on this site belongs to the Greek Library of London or is used with permission.
Liability
We aim to keep the catalogue accurate and the website available, but we do not guarantee it will always be uninterrupted or error-free, and details such as availability or opening hours can change. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the site or our services. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot lawfully be limited, such as for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
Payments are processed by Stripe and account sign-in by our authentication provider; we are not liable for outages of those third-party services, though we will help however we can if one affects you.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time, for example when our services change. The date at the top shows when they were last revised. Continuing to use the site or your membership after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and any dispute will be dealt with by the courts of England and Wales.
